    The association between accruals and stock return following IFRS3

    The purpose of this study is to investigate the correlation between accruals and stock return and further the quality of accounting accruals shown in financial statements for shareholders to predict their future returns. This study uses an inimitable location which is provided by FRS3 in the UK to highlight the well-documented accrual anomaly as important components of financial performance to help the users to understand the archived performance of a firm. Specifically, this paper focuses on the accrual anomaly phenomenon in the UK on the adoption of FRS No. 3 for a period from 2008 to 2017. Our result shows that stock returns can be predicted by accruals attributable to accounting misrepresentations. Generally, our findings support the information disclosure due to FRS No. 3. Also, the results are consistent with increased accounting disclosure to help investors protect themselves from inefficiencies and to encourage them to be aware of accurate stock prices in the market

    A New 4-DOF Robot for Rehabilitation of Knee and Ankle-Foot Complex: Simulation and Experiment

    Stationary robotic trainers are lower limb rehab robots which often incorporate an exoskeleton attached to a stationary base. The issue observed in the stationery trainers for simultaneous knee and ankle-foot complex joints is that they restrict the natural motion of ankle-foot in the rehab trainings due to the insufficient Degrees of Freedom (DOFs) of these trainers. A new stationary knee-ankle-foot rehab robot with all necessary DOFs is developed here. A typical rehab training is first implemented in simulation, and then tested on a healthy subject. Results show that the proposed system functions naturally and meets the requirements of the desired rehab training.Comment: 23 pages, 14 figure

    The dysbindin-containing complex (BLOC-1) in brain: developmental regulation, interaction with SNARE proteins and role in neurite outgrowth.

    Previous studies have implicated DTNBP1 as a schizophrenia susceptibility gene and its encoded protein, dysbindin, as a potential regulator of synaptic vesicle physiology. In this study, we found that endogenous levels of the dysbindin protein in the mouse brain are developmentally regulated, with higher levels observed during embryonic and early postnatal ages than in young adulthood. We obtained biochemical evidence indicating that the bulk of dysbindin from brain exists as a stable component of biogenesis of lysosome-related organelles complex-1 (BLOC-1), a multi-subunit protein complex involved in intracellular membrane trafficking and organelle biogenesis. Selective biochemical interaction between brain BLOC-1 and a few members of the SNARE (soluble N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor attachment protein receptor) superfamily of proteins that control membrane fusion, including SNAP-25 and syntaxin 13, was demonstrated. Furthermore, primary hippocampal neurons deficient in BLOC-1 displayed neurite outgrowth defects. Taken together, these observations suggest a novel role for the dysbindin-containing complex, BLOC-1, in neurodevelopment, and provide a framework for considering potential effects of allelic variants in DTNBP1--or in other genes encoding BLOC-1 subunits--in the context of the developmental model of schizophrenia pathogenesis

    A case for improved assessment of gut permeability: a meta-analysis quantifying the lactulose:mannitol ratio in coeliac and Crohn’s disease

    Background: A widely used method in assessing small bowel permeability is the lactulose:mannitol test, where the lactulose:mannitol ratio (LMR) is measured. However, there is discrepancy in how the test is conducted and in the values of LMR obtained across studies. This meta-analysis aims to determine LMR in healthy subjects, coeliac and Crohn’s disease. Methods: A literature search was performed using PRISMA guidance to identify studies assessing LMR in coeliac or Crohn’s disease. 19 studies included in the meta-analysis measured gut permeability in coeliac disease, 17 studies in Crohn’s disease. Outcomes of interest were LMR values and comparisons of standard mean difference (SMD) and weighted mean difference (WMD) in healthy controls, inactive Crohn’s, active Crohn’s, treated coeliac and untreated coeliac. Pooled estimates of differences in LMR were calculated using the random effects model. Results: Pooled LMR in healthy controls was 0.014 (95% CI: 0.006–0.022) while pooled LMRs in untreated and treated coeliac were 0.133 (95% CI: 0.089–0.178) and 0.037 (95% CI: 0.019–0.055). In active and inactive Crohn’s disease, pooled LMRs were 0.093 (95% CI: 0.031–0.156) and 0.028 (95% CI: 0.015–0.041). Significant differences were observed in LMR between: (1) healthy controls and treated coeliacs (SMD = 0.409 95% CI 0.034 to 0.783, p = 0.032), (2) healthy controls and untreated coeliacs (SMD = 1.362 95% CI: 0.740 to 1.984, p < 0.001), (3) treated coeliacs and untreated coeliacs (SMD = 0.722 95% CI: 0.286 to 1.157, p = 0.001), (4) healthy controls and inactive Crohn’s (SMD = 1.265 95% CI: 0.845 to 1.686, p < 0.001), (5) healthy controls and active Crohn’s (SMD = 2.868 95% CI: 2.112 to 3.623, p < 0.001), and (6) active Crohn’s and inactive Crohn’s (SMD = 1.429 (95% CI: 0.580 to 2.278, p = 0.001). High heterogeneity was observed, which was attributed to variability in protocols used across different studies. Conclusion: The use of gut permeability measurements in screening and monitoring of coeliac and Crohn’s disease is promising. LMR is useful in performing this function with significant limitations. More robust alternative tests with higher degrees of clinical evidence are needed if measurements of gut permeability are to find widespread clinical use

    Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma: A Therapeutic Challenge

    Diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) is a tumor of the brainstem, specifically in the pons, accounting for 10–20% of all of central nervous system (CNS) tumors in children. Unfortunately, DIPG is the leading cause of death in children with CNS cancers. Clinical interventions trying to effectively treat children with DIPG have failed despite 40 years of clinical trials. The critical location of these tumors eliminates extensive surgical resection as an option. Radiation therapy (RT) is the standard of care, and although it improves the clinical symptoms of most patients, the results are temporary, with tumor progression typically occurring months post radiation. Given the dismal prognosis associated with this disease and the challenge to find chemotherapeutic agents, especially molecularly targeted drugs that improve the survival of the patients, there is a strong incentive to move new treatments forward into clinical trials. The more effective treatment would potentially involve combinatory therapeutic regimens with new epigenetic drugs that can offer synergistic benefits and potentially increase therapeutic efficacy. The increasing knowledge of genomic, epigenomic, and proteomic characteristics of DIPG is opening doors to new therapeutic avenues and provides hope and promise for this devastating childhood cancer

    Risk Factors for Nonplatelet Thromboxane Generation After Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery

    BACKGROUND: Persistent thromboxane (TX) generation while receiving aspirin therapy is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events. The Reduction in Graft Occlusion Rates (RIGOR) study found that aspirin-insensitive TXA2 generation, indicated by elevated urine 11-dehydro-TXB2 (UTXB2) 6 months after coronary artery bypass graft surgery, was a potent risk factor for vein graft thrombosis and originated predominantly from nonplatelet sources. Our goal was to identify risks factors for nonplatelet TXA2 generation. METHODS AND RESULTS: Multivariable modeling was performed by using clinical and laboratory variables obtained from 260 RIGOR subjects with verified aspirin-mediated inhibition of platelet TXA2 generation. The strongest variable associated with UTXB2 6 months after surgery, accounting for 47.2% of the modeled effect, was urine 8-iso-prostaglandin (PG)F2alpha, an arachidonic acid metabolite generated nonenzymatically by oxidative stress (standardized coefficient 0.442, P \u3c 0.001). Age, sex, race, lipid therapy, creatinine, left ventricular ejection fraction, and aspirin dose were also significantly associated with UTXB2 (P \u3c 0.03), although they accounted for only 4.8% to 10.2% of the modeled effect. Urine 8-iso-PGF2alpha correlated with risk of vein graft occlusion (odds ratio 1.67, P=0.001) but was not independent of UTXB2. In vitro studies revealed that endothelial cells generate TXA2 in response to oxidative stress and direct exposure to 8-iso-PGF2alpha. CONCLUSIONS: Oxidative stress-induced formation of 8-iso-PGF2alpha is strongly associated with nonplatelet thromboxane formation and early vein graft thrombosis after coronary artery bypass graft surgery. The endothelium is potentially an important source of oxidative stress-induced thromboxane generation. These findings suggest therapies that reduce oxidative stress could be useful in reducing cardiovascular risks associated with aspirin-insensitive thromboxane generation
